Wat Khunchan is a Buddhist temple, that was built in Burmese style. The temple hired Burmese workers to build many structures in the temple, that make it unique and different from thousands of other Buddhist temples in Thailand. And it's one of my favorite temples in Bangkok.

The iconic Buddha statue, sitting on the three-headed elephant, will likely attract many travellers from Wat Paknam to this temple, because it can be seen clearly, especially when you stand on the top floor of the biggest stupa of Wat Paknam.

Many things that you will see in the temple are Hindu Ganesha god (the elephant-headed god), Rahu god swallowing the sun, a Burmese-style Buddha statue carved from white jade, a Burmese-style reclining Buddha statue, Buddhist statues, child statues, etc.

But the one I like most is the crematorium in Burmese style. It's covered with coloured mosaic, that shines brightly in the sunlight. Moreover, there are mythical creatures stand beside. It looks unique, of course, it sounds weird to you.

According to the history of the temple, it was built by Phraya Maha Amataythibodi, located in Thoburi area. This year 2023 marks 186 years since the temple was built.  

After the construction was completed, the temple was given a name "Wat Khunchan" to honour the builder of the temple, who won the battle of Vientiane. 

Later, the youngest daughter of the builder helped restore the temple, and asked King Rama 5 for the new name of the temple. So its name was changed to "Wat Waramatayaphanthasararam". However, most people still call its original name because it's easy to remember.

วัดขุนจันทร์

วัดพุทธในไทยสไตล์พม่า ซึ่งทางวัดได้จ้างคนงานพม่ามาสร้าง ทำให้รูปแบบสถาปัตยกรรมต่างๆ ไม่เหมือนวัดไทยเลย สวยงาม มีเอกลักษณ์ โดยเฉพาะเมรุเผาศพ

วัดนี้เป็นวัดเก่าแก่ในย่านฝั่งธนบุรี สร้างมาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ.2380 ก็อายุ 186 ปีแล้วนะ สร้างโดย พระยามหาอำมาตยาธิบดี (ป้อม อมาตยกุล) และได้ตั้งชื่อว่า "วัดขุนจันทร์" เพราะผู้สร้างวัดนี้ได้รับชัยชนะจากศึกที่เวียงจันทร์ 

ต่อมาในสมัย ร.5 ลูกสาวคนเล็กของพระยาอำมาตยาธิบดี ได้ทำการบูรณะวัดใหม่ แล้วขอพระราชทานชื่อวัดใหม่จาก ร.5 วัดจึงถูกเปลี่ยนชื่อเป็น “วัดวรามาตยภัณฑสาราราม” แต่คนส่วนใหญ่ยังคงเรียกวัดนี้ว่าวัดขุนจันทร์ น่าจะเป็นเพราะชื่อที่จำง่าย

สิ่งที่น่าสนใจภายในวัด คือ หลวงพ่อโต ซึ่งเป็นพระพุทธรูปเก่าแก่ ถูกทิ้งไว้ใต้หลังคาสังกะสีมาเป็นแรมปี จนชาวบ้านช่วยกันสร้างวิหารเพื่อประดิษฐานท่าน ใกล้ๆ กัน มีพระนอน ซึ่งเป็นพระแบบพม่า ปากทาสีแดง 

นอกจากนี้ ยังมีวิหารหลวงพ่อหยกขาว เป็นพระพุทธรูปศิลปะพม่าเช่นเดียวกัน โดยด้านหน้าประตูทางเข้าวิหาร จะมีรูปปั้นควายตัวนึงด้วย แต่สิ่งที่สะดุดตามากที่สุดเวลาเดินเข้ามาในวัดคือ พระพุทธชินราชองค์ใหญ่นั่งอยู่บนช้างสามเศียร และช้างนั้นก็ยืนอยู่บนพระราหู 

ถ้าใครได้ขึ้นไปบนเจดีย์ของ วัดปากน้ำภาษีเจริญ ให้ลองมองไปรอบๆ จะเห็นพระองค์นี้เลย วัดก็อยู่ใกล้ๆ กัน เดินข้ามสะพานก็ไปถึงแล้ว

นอกจากสถาปัตยกรรมที่แปลกตา วัดนี้ยังโด่งดังในเรื่องการสะเดาะเคราะห์ปีชง และบูชาพระราหู ซึ่งจะจัดพิธีสวดมนต์นพเคราะห์ราหู ขึ้นอยู่เป็นประจำ
